The Greenville High School/L-3 Communications Robotics team won a silver medal in another FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) regional round of competition Saturday in New Orleans.
Member Chris Follett said the team, known as the Robowranglers, completed the qualifying rounds of the Overdrive event with an 8-1 record. The local students continued their success by advancing through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, but coming up short in the finals.
A total of 47 teams from across the country were entered in the regional event, according to Follett.
The Robowranglers received two awards, he added. The team was presented with the Delphi Driving Tomorrow's Technology Award for its design of the robot entered in the competition.
John V-Neun, the lead engineer for the team, was presented the Woody Flowers Award as the outstanding mention of the regional competition. V-Neun works for RackSolutions, which is sponsor of the team, along with L-3 Communications.
The Robowranglers consist of students and teachers from GHS, along with engineers from RackSolutions and L-3 Communications, who team together each year to build a robot.
Earlier this month, the team won another regional competition in St. Louis, qualifying it for the national competition April 17-19 in Atlanta.
